Heating our homes is changing the planet, and here’s why. Most of us use natural gas for warmth and cooking – that’s 85% in the UK and 40% in the US. But this comfort comes at a cost. Every time you turn up the heat or boil water, you add to the greenhouse gases warming your atmosphere. In fact, domestic and commercial use of natural gas makes up a significant chunk of carbon emissions, fueling the climate crisis.

To align with the goal of net zero by 2050, shifting to alternative energy sources becomes not just preferable but necessary. Hydrogen heating systems are a potential solution, promising low or zero emissions. The real task now is scaling up hydrogen production to meet national, commercial demands.

Is Hydrogen a Clean Fuel?

Hydrogen often steals the spotlight as a clean fuel, burned to produce only water and no carbon dioxide, setting it apart from fossil fuels. However, what defines its clean status is the production method. Not all hydrogen is created equal. The greenest hydrogen comes from electrolysis, where water molecules are split into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity derived from renewable energy. This process, resulting in what’s known as “green” hydrogen, ensures the fuel’s lifecycle is emission-free.

Yet, despite ambitions worldwide to ramp up green hydrogen production, it remains elusive, with most hydrogen still produced in ways that emit pollutants. Most hydrogen available today is what we term “grey” hydrogen. It’s produced through a process where natural gas meets extremely hot steam, releasing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. This method not only adds harmful gases to our air but also, throughout its supply chain, emits methane – a gas vastly more potent in its greenhouse effect than CO2 over the short term.

Then there’s “blue” hydrogen. This type of hydrogen is manufactured similarly to grey, but it captures and stores the byproduct carbon. Though it sounds promising, the reality is that the carbon capture rates are currently too low for it to be deemed clean. However, technology has shown potential, with capture rates reaching 90% and aspirations to exceed 95%. Achieving this, alongside minimizing methane leaks, could transform blue hydrogen into a low-carbon option, though it comes with a higher price tag.

Another interesting variant is “pink” hydrogen, produced through electrolysis powered by nuclear energy.

How Can Hydrogen Heat Homes?

Boilers currently using natural gas can be easily adapted to become “hydrogen-ready,” meaning they’d have the capability to burn either natural gas or hydrogen. This flexibility ensures that the transition from fossil fuels towards cleaner energy sources can happen smoothly without necessitating major changes in your home. 

Some forward-thinking companies are already exploring “hydrogen blend-ready” boilers, capable of running on a mix of 80% natural gas and 20% hydrogen. While it’s a step towards reducing emissions, the change isn’t monumental due to hydrogen’s lower energy volume compared to natural gas. Research by the Fraunhofer Institute indicates that mixing 20% hydrogen with natural gas only cuts greenhouse gas emissions by about 6 to 7%.

Right now, the UK allows just a tiny 0.1% hydrogen mix in our natural gas supply because the infrastructure for massive hydrogen production is still catching up. Also, hydrogen and methane gases don’t behave the same way, especially in terms of their travel speed through pipes.

But FutureGrid’s groundbreaking research could change that. This purpose-built facility is pushing the boundaries by testing how our gas systems can manage increasing concentrations of hydrogen, potentially up to 100%. 

If we perfectly implement hydrogen blending on a national scale, it could cut carbon emissions as much as removing two million cars off our roads every year.

The Transition to Hydrogen Heating System

Currently, the UK government is knee-deep in trials, assessing everything from costs to safety. Decisions on hydrogen’s role in home heating are set for 2026. Although it’s uncertain how prominent a role hydrogen will play, any shift would likely roll out in three stages.

Stage 1

Ahead of 2025, you're looking at boilers being developed to a new 'hydrogen-ready' standard. They'll run on natural gas but can be quickly adapted to work with 100% hydrogen.

Your gas supply will get a blend of natural gas and hydrogen. This cleaner mix, around 20% hydrogen, could work with most existing boilers, including new British Gas models. You can see this happening around 2028 or later.

Stage 3

The final leap is a full switch to 100% hydrogen boilers. This major transition will likely unfold in the mid-2040s. By then, every new boiler sold in the UK would be designed to run solely on hydrogen.

This gradual transition is good news for most of us. By the time a significant shift occurs, many will have already upgraded to hydrogen-ready boilers, making the switch relatively straightforward. It's essential to recognize that hydrogen boilers are merely one aspect of broader governmental strategies aimed at reducing carbon emissions from home heating.

Equally important are heat pumps, which are predicted to significantly contribute to our goals for a greener, more sustainable heating solution.
